Left door jamb from a temple of Amenemhat I

Middle Kingdom

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 108

The inscription on this jamb and on the matching one at the right are identical except for their orientation: in both cases the hieroglyphs face the doorway. A sky sign at the top is supported on both sides by was scepters, symbolizing dominion, resting on the land sign. Within this frame are the names and titles of Amenemhat I in two columns. Taken together, the motif represents the king's domination of the universe.
