Drawing for theatrical costumes for a pirate, a captain, and ship crew, for 'Captain of Treasure Ship'

Vincente Minnelli American

Not on view

Drawing, designs for three men's costumes for 'Captain of Treasure Ship', part of a group of costume designs by Vincente Minnelli. The first costume, for a pirate, consists of a scarlet jacket with white lapels and trimmings, and black and yellow striped sleeves with wide, red cuffs, a white neckerchief, and a wide felt hat. The captain's costume consists of an ultramarine blue jacket with brown and scarlet lapels, cuffs, and trimmings, a scarlet waistcoat with white bundles of flowers, worn over a white shirt and neckerchief, and white tight-fitting breeches with high-heeled, pointed-toe long boots. The captain wears a large hat, and holds a telescope on his hand. Two sketches, one of them illustrating a ship, are executed next to him. Another sketch, possibly for another member of the ship's crew, appears under the pirate, dressed with wide jacket and trousers, and square-toed, high-heeled shoes. Design annotations are inscribed in graphite all over the designs. Fabric swatches of blue, tan, pink, and yellow cloth are attached to the sheet.
