James McBey British

Not on view

A Spanish galleon, with its stern high in the air, is drifting sideways at the mercy of a storm near a rocky coast. The artist noted on one of the trial proofs that the subject represents a ship of the Spanish Armada - the Santa Caterina - going on the rocks at Collieston, a small coastal village in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Beyond a gully to the left, a small group of people is watching the doomed ship.
