The Metropolitan Museum of Art continues its popular "Met Holiday Mondays" program by opening the doors of its main building to the public on Presidents' Day, February 21. (The next Met Holiday Monday will be April 25, during spring break week.)
"Families, college students, tourists—in fact, anyone who is in New York City during the
long Presidents' Day holiday weekend—will find much to delight them at the Met," commented Emily K. Rafferty, President of the Metropolitan Museum. "Special exhibitions address a variety of interests for people of all ages, discussion and sketching activities appeal to children and their parents, and the Met's encyclopedic permanent collection represents the
best artistic achievements from all parts of the world and all historical periods."
Presidents' Day weekend is the last chance to see Between Here and There: Passages in Contemporary Photography, a
presentation on the themes of dislocation and displacement in works by 22 photographers—including Richard Long, Ed Ruscha, On Kawara, Rineke Dijkstra, Thomas Struth, and Weng Fen, among others—who abandoned conventional media in the 1960s and 1970s (closes February 21). Also on view will be: "Our Future Is In the Air": Photographs from the 1910s, an installation that captures through photographs the dynamic and tumultuous decade that ushered in the modern age (through April 10); Cézanne's Card Players, an exhibition that reunites for the first time the works from the artist's series of card player canvases together with their associated oil studies and drawings (through May 8); and Guitar Heroes: Legendary Craftsmen from Italy to New York, a display
of some 80 guitars and other stringed instruments that set the context for exemplary works by three New York master luthiers of Italian descent—John D'Angelico, James D'Aquisto, and John Monteleone (through July 4).
Charles H. Tally Holiday Monday Family Programs specially organized for Presidents' Day include discussion and sketching activities that will be available for families with children ages 5 through 12 at 11 a.m., noon, 1:15 and 2:30 p.m. These programs are free with Museum admission.
The Metropolitan's public cafeteria and several of the Museum gift shops in the Main Building will be open on all Holiday Mondays.
A different selection of galleries and exhibitions will be open each Holiday Monday.
