Metropolitan Museum's Restaurants to Offer Van Gogh-Inspired Dining and Afternoon Tea

Inspired by the exhibition Vincent van Gogh: The Drawings– which will be on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art from October 18 through December 31, 2005 – the Museum's restaurants will offer visitors a variety of special dining experiences, including afternoon tea, guest chefs from around New York City, and prix-fixe dinner options.

A Dutch-themed afternoon tea will be offered in the Petrie Court café, which is located in the Carroll and Milton Petrie European Sculpture Court, against the backdrop of Central Park. The tea service will include more than ten choices of tea, plus an assortment of savory and sweet tea delicacies with a Dutch influence. Executive Chef Jayson Brown and Executive Pastry Chef Randy Eastman collaborated to create such offerings as croque monsieur with gouda cheese, asparagus and smoked salmon crêpe, Dutch boterkoek, and apple spice cake. The tea service is available Tuesdays through Thursdays and Sundays, 2:30 – 4:30 p.m., as well as Fridays and Saturdays, 2:30 – 5:00 p.m., at $24 per person.

Guest chefs will also be featured in the Petrie Court Café – Franck Deletrain of Café Centro on Friday, October 21, and Julian Alonzo of Brasserie 8 ½ on Saturday, October 22. An exclusive Provençal dinner menu will be featured on each of those evenings. Reservations are recommended (212-570-3964).

Through December, the café's lunch and dinner menu also will have a Provençal theme. Lunch specials will be offered daily, Tuesdays through Sundays. And a three-course prix-fixe dinner menu with wine pairings will be offered every Friday and Saturday evening. For further information, call (212) 570-3964.

Also, in the public cafeteria and the American Wing Café, guests can continue their Van Gogh dining experience with featured dessert items such as Dutch pear and gingerbread torte, Provençal roasted pecan chocolate torte, and sunflower shortcake cookie.

Vincent van Gogh: The Drawings is the first major exhibition in the United States ever to focus on Van Gogh's extraordinary drawings. One hundred thirteen works from public and private collections worldwide will reveal the range and brilliance of the artist' draftsmanship as it evolved over the course of his decade-long career.

The exhibition in New York is made possible by United Technologies Corporation.

The exhibition was jointly organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam.

The exhibition is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.
