Mark Polizzotti

Publisher and Editor in Chief

Before joining the Met in 2010, Mark worked as an editor and editorial director for several museum and trade publishers, including the MFA Boston, Random House, Weidenfeld & Nicolson, and David R. Godine. In addition to his publishing activities, he is the author of twelve books on topics such as literature, translation, film, music, and Surrealism. He has also published numerous translations of fiction and nonfiction works from the French.

Peter is a 1988 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. His career in publishing began at Crown Books and James Stockton & Associates in San Francisco and continued at Princeton University Press. He first joined the Met in 1989 and has held a number of positions in the Publications Department since then. He was named Associate Publisher in 2021.

Jennifer Bantz

Manager of Editorial Interpretation

Jenny edits exhibition labels and catalogues, and manages the overall program of editorial work on gallery labels for exhibitions and collection installations. Prior to joining The Met, she held editorial positions at Oxford University Press and the Guggenheim Museum (where she edited the award-winning catalogue Alberto Burri: The Trauma of Painting) and served as manager of interpretive materials at the Brooklyn Museum. Other art museum experience includes a graduate internship at the National Gallery of Art and a graduate fellowship at the California Museum of Photography. Her research interests include nineteenth-century photography and interpretive strategies at art museums.

Elizabeth Benjamin

Editor

Elizabeth joined The Met in 2015, and since 2018 has edited exhibition labels and catalogues in the Publications and Editorial Department. She holds a PhD in Art History from Northwestern University, with a focus on nineteenth-century European painting and the domestic interior, and earned her B.A. in Art History and French from the University of California, Berkeley. Previously she worked for Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra in San Francisco.

Dr. Block edits exhibition catalogues and the Metropolitan Museum Journal. She earned her PhD in art history at The Graduate Center, City University of New York, with a focus on 19th-century U.S. painting. She also holds an M.A. in American Studies from Columbia University, and a B.A. in English and Art History from The George Washington University. Dr. Block's book Beyond Vanity: The History and Power of Hairdressing will be published by MIT Press in fall 2024. Her book Dressing Up: The Women Who Influenced French Fashion was published by MIT Press. It is the winner of the Victorian Society in America book award 2022, and was shortlisted for the Association of Dress Historians 2022 Book of the Year. Her articles appear in American Art and multiple other journals.

Anne edits exhibition catalogues and labels and is also the current editor of The Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin. Prior to joining The Met in 2013, she was assistant editor at The Burlington Magazine in London. Her writing and criticism have appeared in The Burlington Magazine, Hyperallergic, and Studio International. Anne has a B.A. and M.A. in art history from the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London.

Prior to joining The Met, Paul gained experience producing books at various New York-based art galleries. He studied painting and printmaking at Arizona State University, where he received a B.A. In addition to his work at the museum, Booth maintains an active studio practice and regularly exhibits his work.

Image Acquisitions Speciailst

Shannon holds a B.A. in Art History and Spanish from Lafayette College, Easton, PA, and an M.A. in Contemporary Art from Sotheby’s Institute of Art, New York, NY. Prior to joining The Met, Shannon worked at Gagosian for nearly five years managing a quarterly magazine that highlighted the gallery’s roster of artists.

Elizabeth De Mase

Senior Image Acquisitions Manager

Elizabeth joined the Publications and Editorial Department in 2015. She has previously held positions at David Zwirner gallery, Art+Auction, and Artinfo.com. Within the Department, she manages the Image Acquisitions and Permission team, which coordinates photography, gathers images, and clears rights for all museum publications. In addition, she works closely with Design, Exhibitions, and External Affairs on all images related to the Museum’s exhibitions. She has contributed to Irving Penn: Centennial (2017), Everything Is Connected: Art and Conspiracy (2018), Louise Bourgeois: Paintings (2022), and Surrealism Beyond Borders (2022) to name a few. Elizabeth holds a B.A. in Photography from the University of Delaware and is a graduate of the Columbia Business School Leadership development program.

Kayla joined the Publications and Editorial team in 2018. In the department, she edits and oversees gallery texts and publications. Previously, she worked at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and was a Met intern. Born and raised in the Ozarks, she earned degrees in journalism and art history from the University of Missouri, Columbia.

Robyn holds a B.A. in Political Science from Columbia University, where she spent two terms working as a student intern at The Met before studying Italian abroad at the University of Bologna. She currently assists the publishing department with developing and maintaining book schedules from receipt of manuscript through delivery to printer.

Gillian Hanna

Associate Editor for Interpretation

Gillian joined The Met in 2022 as the Associate Editor for Interpretation. She holds a B.A. in Anthropology from New York University and an M.A. in Museum Studies from George Washington University. Her graduate research focused on exhibition development, visitor experience, and decolonization practices in U.S. museums. At The Met Gillian edits interpretive texts for exhibitions and reinstallations of the permanent collection. She also contributes to the interpretive planning process for these projects. Gillian is committed to making everyone feel welcome at the Museum. She has previously worked for the National Gallery of Art, the Department of the Interior, the National Park Service’s Mary McLeod Bethune Council House, and the American Museum of Natural History.

Manager of Editorial Marketing and Rights

Rachel joined the Publications and Editorial Department in 2014 where she has previously held the roles of Publishing and Marketing Assistant and Assistant for Administration. She manages the MetPublications website, the Museum's text licensing program in all languages, and the @MetPubs Instagram account. In addition to her work marketing The Met's titles, Rachel also consults on Museum co-publications and the Costume Institute catalogues. She has been a speaker at the National Museum Publishing Seminar and is an organizing member of the International Association of Museum Publishers. She holds a B.A. in Art History from New York University and an M.A. in Art History from Hunter College. Her own research centers on the intersections of art and publishing.

Lauren Knighton

Lauren joined the The Met in 2015, having previously held the position of Director of Publications & Marketing at David Zwirner, New York.

Lauren has produced books on the artists Louise Bourgeois, Cecily Brown, Dan Flavin, Lucio Fontana, Donald Judd, Alice Neel, Lygia Pape, Ad Reinhardt, Fred Sandback, and Richard Serra, and on the subjects of Mayan Art, medieval Armenian art, Byzantine African art, American ceramics, and 20th-century photography and printmaking.

Lauren is the current production manager of the annual The Roof Garden Commission series and the Metropolitan Museum Journal. She holds a B.F.A. in Photography from the School of Visual Arts, New York.

After stints in advertising, education, and politics, Mary Jo landed her dream job at The Met in 2005. She has a B.A. in music and English from Oberlin College and an M.B.A. in finance from New York University.

Michael Sittenfeld

Associate Publisher for Editorial

Michael joined the Publications and Editorial Department in 2010. He oversees all editorial work and assists in the management of the department. Prior to his arrival at The Met, he was Director of Publications at the Jewish Museum in New York, where he edited and supervised the publication of books about Modigliani, Nevelson, Chagall, Man Ray, Eva Hesse, Abstract Expressionism, Sarah Bernhardt, New York photography, and many other subjects. At the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, he was Associate Director of Publications, and at the Art Institute of Chicago he was the editor of the journal Museum Studies as well as books on architecture and American art. Mike has an M.A. in English from the University of Chicago and a B.A. in English from Columbia University.

Alison project manages and edits interpretive text for multi-year, multi-author permanent collection initiatives. Engaging with the latest in museum interpretation issues and best practices around language is a highlight of her work. Alison holds a B.A. in Archaeology from Johns Hopkins University and an M.A. in Museum Anthropology from Columbia University. Prior to joining The Met in 2021, Alison worked in exhibition development at the 9/11 Memorial Museum and in education at the New-York Historical Society.

Dale joined The Met in 2000 after working at the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. The numerous publications he has edited for the Museum include The Colonial Andes: Tapestries and Silverwork, 1530–1830 (Alfred H. Barr Jr. Award, 2004), Art of the Samurai: Japanese Arms and Armor, 1156–1868 (2009), The Renaissance Portrait from Donatello to Bellini (2011), Sahel: Art and Empires on the Shores of the Sahara (2020), and The Medici: Portraits and Politics, 1512–1570 (2021). As editor of the Bulletin from 2013 to 2023, he oversaw some 40 issues of The Met's quarterly member's magazine, among them Before Yesterday We Could Fly: An Afrofuturist Period Room (Winter 2022), World War I and the Visual Arts (Fall 2017), and A Time of Crisis (Fall 2020).

Elisa joined The Met in 2014 after many years as a freelance editor and project manager with a primary focus on museum publications. Previously, she was managing editor at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; senior editor at Abrams, where she acquired and edited books on art, architecture, design, photography, and film; and staff editor and researcher at the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. She has a B.A. from New York University and an M.A. from Yale University.

Cecilia Weddell

Before joining The Met’s Publications and Editorial team, Cecilia was Associate Editor at the literary magazine Harvard Review. She has M.A. and PhD degrees in Editorial Studies from the Boston University Editorial Institute, and graduate certificates in Latin American studies, the teaching of writing, and literary history. Her doctoral dissertation was a bilingual and critical edition of newspaper essays published by the Mexican feminist writer Rosario Castellanos in the 1960s and 1970s.

Robert Weisberg

Robert has been in the Publications and Editorial Department of The Met since 1994. His position has a variety of responsibilities, including typesetting all non-exhibition labels, preparing the large print exhibition accessibility booklets and accompanying PDFS for major exhibitions, archiving publications after printing, working on MetPublications, and managing department technology. Before moving over to typeset museum labels, he managed in-house corrections on publications. He has a B.A. in political science from Williams College. He has served as the program co-chair for the Museum Computer Network (MCN) annual conference and has presented at numerous conferences and events including MCN, the National Museum Publishing Seminar, Book Expo America, and Digital Identities. He writes regularly online about the organizational culture of cultural organizations.

Chris first joined the Publications and Editorial Department in 1993. From 1996-2003, he was a Production Manager in the Publications Department at The Museum of Modern Art. Chris holds a B.A. in English from Cornell University and has studied printmaking at the School of Visual Arts and The Art Student’s League.
