아미타불 신앙은 이상적인 환경과 거리가 먼현세에서는 개오를 하는 것이 불가능함을 강조하고, 깨우침에 도달하기에 알맞은 정토또는 중간 지점인 극락정토에서의 왕생을 기원합니다. 이 아미타불상의 양팔의 위치를 볼 때 소실된 손은 사유의 수인을 맺고 있었을 것으로 추정됩니다. 이 불상은 목재를 많이 사용하는 심에 점토를 입혀 옻칠한 마포로 싼 복잡한 건칠 기법으로 만든 후 심을 제거하였습니다. 이 기법은 8세기에 중국으로부터 일본까지 널리 보급되었습니다.
