The Formal Audience of Cornelis Hop at the Court of Louis XV

Louis Michel Dumesnil French

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 899

On July 25, 1719, two days after his formal entry into Paris, Dutch ambassador Cornelis Hop’s public audience with Louis XV took place at the Louvre (the court resided in Paris at the time). This painting is one of the few representations of such an official event. His diplomatic credentials still in hand, Hop delivers a formal speech to the child king. The man dressed in light blue and attentively taking notes might be the artist.
