Garnet intaglio of Brutus

Roman

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 166

The portrait can be identified confidently as that of Marcus Junius Brutus, one of Julius Caesar's assassins in 44 B.C., both because of its similarity to coins he issued and because the intaglio depicts a tiny dagger, the weapon that he used to stab the dictator to death.
