between 1800 and 1899
Not on view
A box with a locking mechanism (key missing) made in the form of a round-back book. The entire box is covered with highly decorative carving using various techniques. The front cover is decorated with stylized basket of flowers, the back with three roundels captured in scrolling floral motifs. The edges are carved with a pattern of leafy stylized round blossoms. The spine is deeply incised with a leaf motif. The cover is hinged on the front of the book where the spine meets the board. The box interior is lined in purple velvet bordered by embossed gilded paper. It isn't known how the box was constructed, but no metal fasteners were used. -- description by Mindell Dubansky in consultation with Marijn Manuels
