Hinged box
Not on view
Novelty miniature boxes are amongst the most ubiquitous forms of book object internationally. Historically, they have had many uses and been made in a variety of materials and styles. In the 19th century, handmade and commercial book boxes were used for candy, medicines, matches, stationery items, scent, and as chatelaine charms. The three fine silver boxes shown here are an Aesthetic period match case in Japanese style with original, surprisingly large matches and two delicately engraved silver boxes for medicinal or other items.
