Relief Depicting an Assembly of Noblemen
Not on view
This relief along with two other reliefs (cat. nos. 152 and 153) adorned the stupa at Chedi Chula Pathon, located in the ancient Mon city of Nakhon Pathom. The site was excavated by Pierre Dupont in 1940 in cooperation with the Fine Arts Department and re-excavated in 1968, when previously undiscovered sections of the basement terrace were exposed to reveal an extensive suite of narrative decoration. This panel of assembled nobleman was part of a two-part scene; the missing half, according to the Bhojajaniya Jataka, would have depicted the bodhisattva, incarnated as the horse Bhojajaniya, being venerated by the assembly of kings.
