Glass flask

Roman

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 199

Experimentation with glassblowing stimulated an enormous increase in the range of forms and designs that ancient glassworkers could produce; some combined free-blowing with mold-blowing techniques. The impressed spiral pattern on this globular flask is an unusual feature in blown glass. It was achieved by dipping hot glass into an open ribbed mold and then spinning it while blowing. Pattern-molded vessels developed in the eastern Mediterranean and are usually dated to the fourth century ce.
