This watercolor shows George Grosz’s fascination with the theatrical spectacle of bright, neon-lit shops signs in Manhattan streets at night, something he would not have seen in his native Berlin. Arranged as a stage set, the buildings’ facades feature signs for ATHENS STEAKS CHOPS, and a large dangling foot with the letters A.WARD CHIROPODIST, next to a large vertical board offering LOANS. In the near and far distance loom water tanks and skyscrapers.
