Not on view

Hand-colored engraving with design for the costume of a Merveilleuse, part of the book "Incroyables et Merveilleuses," with 33 costume plates designed by Horace Vernet and engraved by Georges Jacques Gatine, published ca. 1815 in Paris. The costume in this plate consists of a long, white satin "Witz-choura" cloak with brown fur borders and hood, revealing the scallop-edged lace border with floral motifs, likely of a dress, matching brown fur muff, black velvet "Toque" hat, and purple pointed shoes with brown fur. The Toque hat is made up of a black, tall, round crown, with no brim, decorated with three large, scrolling white feathers. The shoes, imitating an Arab style, have a long point that scrholls upwards, a strip of brown fur around the ankles, and a purple bow emerging above it.
