Waltner, a frequent contributor to the Gazette des Beaux-Arts, made this etching after Rembrandt’s self-portrait (ca. 1655) in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna to accompany an article on the Dutch seventeenth-century painter published in October 1906. Waltner’s achievements as a reproductive printmaker are closely tied to his work after Rembrandt. Single-sheet signed proofs on luxury paper such as this were printed for an avid market of collectors and connoisseurs.
