War Shirt #1 (from Modern War series)

Bently Spang Native American

Not on view

This sculpture is based on early war shirts and evokes the responsibility assumed by the men to protect their people. Bentley Spang assembles his contemporary shirts from family photographs. Implicit in the works is the responsibility he feels to his people. He explains: "The war shirts I create are really about love and all that accompanies it: courage, respect, honor, and community."
