An Immediate Settlement will Oblige, from "The Graphic" Christmas Number
After John Watson Nicol British, Scottish
Not on view
Nicol's historical genre subject represents a 17th-century gentleman wearing a fine velvet doublet and hose, a wide leather sword belt, and rich red cloak. He holds a sealed letter in one hand, and an open missive in the other. The painting on which this print is based is simply titled "The Letter," but the publisher of "The Graphic" added a more suggestive title to characterize the subject as a wealthy collector who has not yet paid his dealer.
