Kushite king, subsequently modified

Third Intermediate Period

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 125

The shape of the head with small features atop a slender but powerful body conforms to representational conventions associated with Kushites. Beneath the bare torso, the lower body is clothed with a kilt. From a wide belt hangs an apron topped with a leopard's head, a garment associated with royalty, and long cords ending in floral tassels favored by Kushite kings and priests. The arms and legs, now missing, would have been attached separately.
