Between 1978 and 1982, Bustamante made a series of large-format color photographs with his eight-by-ten-inch view camera around the outskirts of Barcelona. The suburbs he captured were a perennial subject of modern artists from the Impressionist painters to the photographers of the American West, including Lewis Baltz and Robert Adams (whose works are on view here). Bustamante titled each work Tableau and described the series as "slow snapshots," in which he balances a cohesive unity and compositional structure with a wealth of detail. Bustamante was one of a number of artists in Europe and America who, beginning around 1980, produced their work at a scale more common to painting. While he was initially dissatisfied with the results at this larger size, advances in digital technology allowed him to realize works such as this unique print two decades later.
