Terracotta hydria: kalpis (water jar)

Greek, Attic

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 171

Woman seated by an altar and thymiaterion (incense burner) being crowned by Eros, satyr and woman with tympanon (tambourine), and woman

Set outdoors, this scene shows a woman burning incense and a satyr with a woman, who may be a maenad. The woman at the right runs away in fright. The powers of Dionysos and Eros are evidently at work.
