Set up your studio at The Met. The Copyist Program offers time and space for artists to develop an artwork through intimate study in the Museum's galleries.
Copyists have created reinterpretations of original artworks in The Met collection since 1872. The program celebrates intensive technical study, deep observation, and encourages sustained engagement with a diverse range of media, including, but not limited to, drawing, painting, and sculpture.
Artists interested in working in the galleries may apply to participate in a free eight-week session during the spring (March through May) or fall (September through December). We accept online applications only. Please read the Copyist Program Terms and Conditions (PDF) and Guidelines for Requesting a Work of Art to Copy (PDF) before applying.
University, college, and atelier groups are welcome on a case-by-case basis and depending on availability. For more information or questions not addressed in the application materials, email creativepractice@metmuseum.org.
Visitors may sketch in the galleries at any time using pencil only.
Watch and read perspectives from artist Jas Knight and students from New York Academy of Art and learn what it’s like to copy in the Museum.
Application deadline for spring 2025: Friday, January 3, 2025. Apply now.
Please check back for details regarding our fall 2025 session.
