Over the course of her 2021-22 MetLiveArts residency, Bijayini Satpathy—described by The New Yorker as "a performer of exquisite grace a technique"—challenged the traditions and boundaries of Odissi, the classical Indian dance form to which she's dedicated her career. With novel, site-specific performances in the Museum's galleries and auditorium, Satpathy explored the intersection of Odissi's sacred and royal traditions with the myriad new vistas that contemporary stages hold.
Now, as part of The Met's celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, MetLiveArts looks back on the groundbreaking works that Bijayini Satpathy created as Artist in Residence. Stay tuned over the course of May for high-quality videos of Satpathy's dynamic performances, and be sure to join Satpathy and composer Bindhumalini Narayanaswamy for a discussion of their collaboration and process, moderated by Limor Tomer, The Met's Lulu C. and Anthony W. Wang General Manager for Live Arts.
