Surprise snake tricks have been popular since the nineteenth century. While their forms vary, the closed book style is a favorite, probably because of its association with the biblical story of Adam and Eve, its simplicity of structure, and potential for decoration. In this case, the book is opened by sliding the foredge down. Simultaneously, a sharp-tongued snake pops out and bites the unsuspecting victim on the hand.
