  • Study of the Queen's Robes (Study for Portrait of Queen Victoria), ca. 1838
Thomas Sully (American, born England, 1783–1872)
    Graphite on paper

    9 1/16 x 7 1/6 in. (23.1 x 18.9 cm)
Lent by Mrs. Arthur A. Houghton Jr., 1994 (L.1994.29.4 recto)

Since Sully would not paint his full-length portrait of Victoria until he returned to Philadelphia, it was crucial that he record costume details on paper. This sketch is inscribed with the artist's color notes: "naples yellow and Bt Sienna / glazed Lake."
