  • Pair of Brooches, 400–600
    Ostrogothic, found in Kerch, Ukraine
    Copper alloy overlaid with silver; L. 2 11/16 and 2 7/8 in. (7.2 and 7.3 cm)
    Purchase, 1989 (98.11.107–8)

Ostrogothic women typically wore a matching pair of brooches such as these at the shoulders to secure their ankle-length garment. A belt with an elaborate buckle (see 95.15.100a-c) cinched the waist. A necklace, bracelet, rings, and earrings would complete the ensemble.
