  • Dining table, 1800–1825
    American; Hancock, Massachusetts
    Pine, maple, basswood

    28 1/2 x 31 1/4 x 96 1/2 in. (72.4 x 79.4 x 245.1 cm)
Friends of the American Wing Fund, 1966 (66.10.1)

Believers ate meals at communal tables like this one. The form is based on medieval trestle tables, but the location of the medial stretcher directly underneath the top (rather than the standard placement just above the floor) is a Shaker innovation.
