This monumental chimneypiece bears analogies to the work of the designer and engraver Jean Le Pautre. One plate from his series Cheminées a la Romaine (Paris, ca. 1663), shows the basic design for this chimneypiece, which originated at the Château du Chay in Chérac. The identity of the helmeted bust has not yet been established.
