Saint John: One of a Pair of Figures from a Crucifixion, ca. 1560
Boxwood; H. 11 in. (27.9 cm)
Rogers Fund, 1947 (47.3.2)
This figure originally stood at the foot of a Crucifixion, as in the complete ivory ensemble (50.182a–g). Despite the gothicizing face of Saint John, the full classical drapery and the firm sense of the body beneath suggest an artist open to Renaissance innovations.
