Attributed to Samuel McIntire (American, 1757–1811)
    American
    Mahogany, birch, white pine; 38 1/2 x 76 x 25 1/2 in. (97.8 x 193 x 64.8 cm)
    Gift of Charles K. Davis, 1946 (46.171.1a,b)

The design of this sofa with an exquisitely carved crest tablet derives from plate 35 of Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet-Maker's and Upholsterer's Drawing-Book (London, 1793). The carving is attributed to Samuel McIntire on the basis of its similarity to that on documented examples. The ultimate source for this carving appears to be plate 6 in The Cabinet-Makers' London Book of Prices (London, 1793), which depicts a large sideboard with a very similar basket of fruit, emblem of fecundity and plenty, depicted on its backboard.
