  • The Lacemaker, 1656–57
    Nicolaes Maes (Dutch, 1634–1693)
    Oil on canvas; 17 3/4 x 20 3/4 in. (45.1 x 52.7 cm)
The Friedsam Collection, Bequest of Michael Friedsam, 1931 (32.100.5)

Maes painted a number of domestic scenes such as this one between 1655 and 1660. The woman's quiet absorption in her work may have been intended as an example of wifely virtue, a subject belabored by Dutch authors such as Jacob ("Father") Cats.
