The Christian Gospel of Luke (2:42–51) recounts Jesus' parents' anxious search for their adolescent son, who goes missing after Passover. After three days, they find him among the learned older men in the Temple. In this Spanish painting, recent scholarship has shown that the Temple is portrayed as a contemporary Jewish synagogue, fitted with hanging glass lamps and a teivah, or raised reader's desk, which Jesus climbs.
