This tankard displays the ample proportions and elaborate cast ornament characteristic of early New York vessels. Especially distinctive features are the cut-card work and meander wire borders surrounding the base and the cast mask and garlands soldered to the handle. A second cast mask adorns the handle terminal. The elegant intertwined monogram, AVH, engraved in script on the cover of the tankard, belonged to Augustus Van Horne (1736–1796), great-great grandfather of the donor.
