Although better known for art pottery, Newcomb College also initiated a program in textiles. Using the same design vocabulary as pottery, similar motifs may be found on textiles. This wall hanging, likely designed by Anna Frances Simpson, is composed of a coarsely woven linen background with silk thread in a darning stitch. A cypress tree arranged in a japanesque composition is draped with swags of Spanish moss. Barely visible is the off-center full moon, reminiscent of Arthur Wesley Dow's Ipswich prints.
