This tall, tapered coffeepot with S-curve spout and its accompanying salver or stand display the tasteful proportions typical of American silver of the 1720s–30s. The emphasis is on line and profile, with ornament restricted to simple moldings, bracket feet on the salver, and neatly engraved armorials. Each object is engraved with the arms of Assheton quartering Shepley, for Ralph Assheton (1695–1745), a prominent Philadelphian whose probate inventory lists 290 ounces of silver plate. The architectural cartouche surrounding the arms, like the overall design, is English in inspiration.
