Slant-front desks were a new form introduced in late seventeenth-century colonial America. Their appearance is testament to an increasingly prosperous, mercantile, and literate colonial society. On this example, the teardrop-shaped drawer pulls are hallmarks of the William and Mary style, as are the large, ebonized ball feet on thick disks.
