Hesperus
The Book of Beasts
This program celebrates the animal world in music,
mime, and prose. With a text drawn from a thirteenth
century English manuscript (Bodleian Library, MS
Bodley 764) and musical accompaniment from the
Glogauer Liederbuch, and composers Johannes Ciconia
(d. 1412) and Jacopo da Bologna (d. 1386?), Hesperus
explores a musical zoo of creatures from the cat to
the unicorn. The program will delight the entire
family with ingenious tales and joyful medieval and
Renaissance music. Hesperus features instrumentalists
Tina Chancey, Grant Herreid, and Tom Zajac playing
more than a dozen early instruments such as rebec,
sackbut, and cornetto; the actor/narrator Oran Sandel;
and mime Mark Jaster, a student of Marcel Marceau.
