June 8 Events at Met Museum: P.S. Art Opening, Museum Mile, and Cool Culture

WHAT: Three photo ops/one evening:

5:30 p.m. Inauguration of P.S. Art 2010—An exhibition of 55 outstanding works of art in diverse media by 70 New York City public school students, ages 4 to 20. The exhibition—on display at the Metropolitan Museum June 9–August 8—celebrates the talent and teaching in the arts capital of the world, and is a collaboration between the New York City Department of Education and Studio in a School.

• Remarks at 5:30 p.m. in the Uris Center for Education including Emily Rafferty (President, The Metropolitan Museum of Art); Caroline Kennedy (Vice-Chair, The Fund for Public Schools); Kate Levin (Commissioner, Department of Cultural Affairs); Agnes Gund (founder, Studio in a School); and Santiago Taveras (Deputy Chancellor, New York City Department of Education).

6:30 Exhibition opens to the public

6–9 p.m. Museum Mile Festival—Special evening of free admission to the public at all museums on Fifth Avenue from 82nd Street to 105th Street. At the Metropolitan, popular exhibitions to be open include:

Picasso in The Metropolitan Museum of Art
American Woman; Fashioning a National Identity
Doug + Mike Starn on the Roof: Big Bambú (viewing only; weather permitting)

6–9 p.m. Cool Culture—Brochures, family passes, floor plans, activity sheets, and information about the Museum's family-friendly self-guided tours at a staffed table on the Plaza in front of the Met. Cool Culture brings together NYC cultural institutions and early education programs, to help parents play an active role as their child's first teacher.
