"THE APOLLO CIRCLE," YOUNG FRIENDS OF THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM, WILL HOST ANNUAL SUMMER CELEBRATION ON THE IRIS AND B. GERALD CANTOR ROOF GARDEN

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 23, 1999

A new membership group designed specifically for individuals ages 21-39 has been formed by The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Apollo Circle, Young Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, a successor to the Museum's Junior Committee, will offer its members a variety of education and social activities and exclusive insights into the Museum's collections. Named after the Greek god of youth, the arts, culture, and music, the group is chaired by Nicholas A. Polsky, Eve Yohalem, and Jill Swid.

Among the many programs offered to Apollo Circle members will be an evening with the Museum's Director, Philippe de Montebello, including a reception; curatorial tours; invitations to exhibition previews; and mini courses on collecting and connoisseurship. Annual dues for individuals and couples are $1,000, with two complimentary tickets for the Summer Celebration.

The Apollo Circle will also sponsor benefit events, such as the Museum's annual Summer Celebration on the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden, scheduled for Wednesday, June 23, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $100 per person in advance ($115 at the door).

The group's proceeds will support The Apollo Circle Fund for Art Conservation. The Metropolitan Museum has four distinct conservation departments — for paintings, objects, paper, and textiles — as well as specialized conservators devoted to working with photographs, Asian art, arms and armor, musical instruments, and The Costume Institute. The Fund will benefit these departments by providing support for activities such as fellowships, publications, and critical conservation research.

For information about The Apollo Circle membership, contact Iris Lior, Development Office, at (212) 650-2371; for tickets to the Summer Celebration on the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden, please call (212) 570-3948.
