This performance and lecture, held in conjunction with the exhibition Choirs of Angels: Painting in Italian Choir Books, 1300–1500 (on view November 25, 2008–April 12, 2009), draws the listener into the ethereal world of medieval choral music. Richard Porterfield, Mannes College instructor and a founding member of the vocal ensemble Lionheart, leads his students from the Schola Cantorum as they perform Gregorian chants from the Met's collection of illuminated choir book pages. Porterfield also discusses the relationship of medieval musical notation to illustration, text, and ritual.
Recorded March 22, 2009
The exhibition is made possible by the Michel David-Weill Fund.
