Annemarie Schimmel Memorial Lecture: Displaying the Self in Early Modern Isfahan

Hosted by the Department of Islamic Art, this annual lecture features current research by leading scholars in the field.

A specialist in the social history of early modern Iran, Kathryn Babayan, associate professor of Iranian History and Culture, Department of Near Eastern Studies, University of Michigan, explores the sense of self that emerged in seventeenth-century Isfahan through such contributing factors as the writing of mystical travelogues, the disciplining of emotions, and a flourishing epistolary culture.
