The centenary of Augustus Saint-Gaudens's passing was commemorated with activities ranging from film screenings to scholarly panels, and culminated in the Met's exhibition, Augustus Saint-Gaudens in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, on view from June 30 through November 15, 2009. Curator Thayer Tolles discusses the reappraisal of Saint-Gaudens's prolific role in the history of late nineteenth-century American sculpture and the Aesthetic Movement, and also considers the artist's relationship with the Metropolitan Museum during his lifetime.
