Inauguration of the New American Wing, with First Lady Michelle Obama

In May 2007, the Museum began a comprehensive renovation of The American Wing. In May 2009, the second phase of the project was completed. To inaugurate the new rooms, First Lady Michelle Obama discusses the importance of preserving American History through the Arts, and the integral role cultural institutions play in the inspiration and support of creativity.

This ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the reopening of The Charles Engelhard Court and twenty historic Period Rooms. Emily K. Rafferty, President of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, hosts the event. She is introduced by James R. Houghton, Chairman of the Board.
