Artist El Anatsui Installing Between Earth and Heaven

West African artist El Anatsui (b. 1944) creates shimmering patchwork "tapestries" of recycled metal that reference both traditional African art—with its emphasis on non-ocular beauty—and the history of contact between African and European people. Here, the artist oversees the installation of his 2006 sculpture, Between Earth and Heaven, at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, with the assistance of the Museum's technicians, conservators, installers, and curator Alisa LaGamma. The artist and helpers crimp and shape the piece so that in its final form it resembles a billowing textile.
