Vajradharma Lokeshvara

Pakistan (NW Frontier Province, probably Swat Valley)

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 237

The peacocks that support the lotus cushion identify this bodhisattva as Vajradharma Lokeshvara. Shown in the act of opening a lotus flower, he also holds a bow and arrow, tools to dispel impediments to enlightenment. His spiritual mentor Amitabha Buddha is enthroned in his diadem.
