Terracotta statuette of Eros flying

Greek, Asia Minor

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 164

While there are sporadic representations of Eros as a baby from the Classical period, the pudgy, winged baby Eros type seen here began in the Hellenistic period. The type was adapted by Roman artists for Cupid and much later in the Renaissance for Putti. This unusually large terracotta still retains considerable traces of its original paint.
