Terracotta statuette of a seated woman

Greek, South Italian, Tarentine

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 161

Seated women occur often among Tarentine terracotta statuettes. The many variants in pose, dress, and attributes suggest many identifications. This lady, who occupies a rock seat, probably belongs to the outdoor world of Dionysos, the realm of maenads, nymphs, and muses.
