Fragment of a terracotta bell-krater (bowl for mixing wine and water)

Attributed to the Group of Polygnotos

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 171

Five athletes

The names of the figures were inscribed. Those preserved are Megakles and Euthykles. Representations of athletes afforded artists the opportunity to depict the human body in varying poses. Of note here is the frontal face, which suggests an interest in conveying not only physical appearance but also a state of being.
