Weiqi Players

China

Not on view

This print features a scene of two weiqi (go in Japanese) players in a garden that is ingeniously set in a pomegranate-shaped frame. This graphic device recalls late Ming (1368–1644) woodblock illustrations of popular novels and plays. Weiqi, a traditional pastime for scholars, gained popularity during the Ming dynasty, as the many Ming-dated weiqi manuals suggest.
