  • Signatures, Inscriptions, and Markings

    Signature: Recto, lower center, in pen and brown ink, signed (?) with a flourish and dated 1549

    Inscription: On recto of old mount lower right, in pen and light brown ink: P.V.; and along lower edge fol: ________ (presumably in the hand of P. Vischer); in pen and brown ink in lower middle, Dessin No. 5 and in lower right corner No. 1664; in graphite at lower right, Josse Amman 1539-1591, the number '5' in both the lower left and right corners, 2001.497 along lower edge, and Jost Amann in the lower right corner of the framing lines. Also very faded on recto C.F.L. Pancoucke. On verso of old mount in graphite lower left: H (?). 19 Jost Amman d'apres Bartsch né en 1539; in brownish crayon in lower and upper right corners '1889.' Two small boards pasted to verso (written in same hand) in graphite. One lists Collections: Crozat, Jules Dupan. Pierre Wischer. C.L.F. Panckoucke. The second is inscribed in French: [..]ne contradiction entre la date de ce dessin (1549) et celle de la naissance de J.A. avoir fait ce dessin à 10 ans, sane être plus precoce que Luvas de Leyde, etc. [..]ssance peut être aussi fauture. Du rest il existe une estampe sur bois da [...] date de 1550 (Bartsch IX.p. 80.22).
